川普和蔡總統於美東時間2日上午通電話，川普的總統交接團隊事後更主動發布新聞稿證實，但引起美國主流媒體不斷以此抨擊川普，這會讓美中關係決裂、他在外交政策上沒做好準備，直到這個週末，美國不少重要媒體如有線電視新聞網（CNN）仍在討論川普與蔡總統的這通電話。

而根據總統交接團隊隨行記者提供的資訊，康威上午出現在川普大樓一樓中庭時受訪說，川普是接到台灣打來的電話，而美國和台灣有數十億美元的生意往來，他不過是接到台灣的總統打來簡短的祝賀來電，就像川普也接聽約50多國如以色列、中國、新加坡、日本、英國等國家的元首及領袖來電而已，「大家應該冷靜下來」。

康威強調，川普知道美國的政策，有記者說，川普的這通電話很敏感，她沒有正面回覆，只接著說「俄羅斯、中國」；記者接著補充是指中國大陸，並問她有沒有想對中國說什麼？康威回應，沒有。

台灣罕見地占據美國媒體的主要版面與時段，卻也遭受池魚之殃，有電子媒體記者在介紹到美國的對台政策時，更錯誤解讀說台灣不是一個國家，以此質疑川普以「台灣的總統」發推特（Twitter）介紹蔡總統，是違反美國的政策。
